How did we get the idea to do this? Well, it started back in 1996 when Tim Bergquist, our founder, began to wonder why no one in the U.S. had ever sold chocolate that was made purely from one countries' cocoa beans. He'd seen the success of specialty coffee shops and the popularity of varietal wines, and wondered if that popularity could apply to chocolate. Further investigation proved that no one in the U.S. was making this type of chocolate. After doing all that market and business analysis stuff, Tim decided to give it a go. He recruited a long-time friend, Mark Stephensen, to help him get the business off the ground. Mark's a bean counter - something that seemed appropriate for a single-bean chocolate business. Linda Walter, a candy consultant based in Salt Lake City joined the team as the company's Vice President of Operations, bringing a vast wealth of experience (far beyond the bean counter and the idea man). From there we did all the legwork to put things together, and the rest, as they say, is history. As far as the other two reasons you might be here… well, the links are up on the left. Enjoy! ![]()
